
RFP: PORT CITY MURAL PROJECT
The Port City Community and ArtHouse RVA are seeking proposals from mural artists for a large-scale outdoor mural to be installed on a metal billboard structure directly facing Richmond Highway.
This project will follow a four-phase selection process:

Site Visits for Selected Artists / April 15 -30

Project Proposals / Due May 30 (Finalists will receive a stipend for proposal development)

Contract Execution / June 15
Project Completion Deadline / December 31, 2025
(We are open to discussing an extension if needed.)
Theme
We are open to a variety of artistic interpretations and encourage artists to bring their own creative vision to this project. However, we are particularly drawn to bold, vibrant imagery and are looking for something distinctive —a design that stands apart from traditional themes often seen in Richmond.
Structure Details
Location:
800 Richmond Hwy. Richmond, VA 23224.
Directly facing Richmond Highway.

Surface:
Large exterior metal structure, approximately 75 years old.

Size:
Approx. 58.5’ wide by 18’ high. (1053 sq ft)

Condition:
The surface is aged and will require preparation. As part of Phase 2 of our RFP process, we will request artist recommendations for proper surface preparation and are open to exploring different options.​​​
Budget
Our expected budget for this project is $20,000. We understand that project costs may vary based on factors such as scale, complexity, prep, and material requirements. While we aim to stay within this budget, we welcome proposals with detailed cost estimates and are open to discussions. ​​​
Portfolio Submissions
Artists interested in this project should submit their portfolio by April 1, 2025.
Please include examples of your work that demonstrate your ability to execute projects of a similar scale, complexity, or artistic detail.
Additionally, you may submit a brief written statement describing your artistic approach and why you would be a strong candidate for this project, with an emphasis on your experience managing large-scale murals.
